Synopsis

During the Great Depression, Mary, alone and with nowhere else to turn, marries the much older wealthy businessman Luther simply to secure a place to belong. But when Luther hears rumors that the southern mining district can make people rich overnight, he sells everything he owns and sets off south with Mary and his stepson, Michel. The crowded wagons, the endless journey, and the cramped roadside inns begin to stir feelings between Mary and Michel that they have both tried desperately to bury. Before they can even reach their destination, their wagon is ambushed by bandits. Mary is kidnapped into the mountains, while Luther refuses to abandon his fortune—even when his own life is on the line. In the moment of greatest danger, Michel breaks free from his restraints and races alone into the valley to save her. When Mary is finally rescued, she realizes that her life has arrived at a crossroads. Will she remain trapped in a suffocating marriage, or leave the past behind and choose the man willing to risk everything for her? What began as a journey to the South will ultimately change the fate of all three of them forever.
