Synopsis

Emily was sent to her grandmother's house from a young age. When she was seventeen, she was brought back home but was never able to fit into a family that favored her younger sister Lily; her attempts to please were seen as vying for attention. She once fell in love with the sincere and passionate James, promising to go abroad together, but due to Alexander drunkenly mistaking her for someone else and Lily's scheming, she was forced to break up with James using a forged bed photo and lied about losing interest before going abroad with Alexander. After a suicide attempt, she forgot the painful memories. Five years later, Emily returned to the country and reunited with everyone. Struggling amid complicated relationships while amnesiac, she only realized after regaining her memories that she had merely been a tool for Lily and a substitute for Alexander. After being diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer, her pleas for help were treated as lies by her family, and her attempts to explain things to James were repeatedly rejected. At the end of her life, she lived alone in a nursing home, accompanied only by her old dog Charlie, and ultimately died alone on New Year's Eve. Emily's death woke everyone up: Alexander saw genuine feelings clearly, James was overcome with guilt, and her family finally realized their favoritism and indifference. The entire story opens with a 'preview of death,' exploring themes of favoritism, misunderstanding, and regret, reflecting the belated realizations and irreparable remorse.
