Synopsis

Cecilia, a daughter of nobility, hides her identity and stays by the side of the knight Edmund for four years, posing as a merchant’s daughter while secretly preparing to propose to him. At a victory banquet, she overhears Edmund admit that he has been with her only to make his first love Isabelle jealous and gain romantic experience. Heartbroken, Cecilia immediately sends a letter accepting her childhood betrothal to Duke Alvin Varenne, and transforms the venue she had readied for her proposal into her wedding site. After Isabelle returns from her travels, she grows openly intimate with Edmund. They kiss in public, spend nights together in the castle, and Isabelle takes the seat reserved for Edmund’s partner. Time and again, Edmund abandons Cecilia for Isabelle. On a hunting excursion, Cecilia is wounded by Oswin, yet Edmund carries Isabelle away and leaves her behind. At the jousting tournament, Edmund issues an honor duel for Isabelle. Unable to dissuade him, Cecilia loses all hope, drops her ring, and departs. Edmund remains convinced that Cecilia is still planning to propose to him and tries repeatedly to stop her. Even after receiving the wedding invitation, he refuses to believe it is real. On her wedding day, Edmund is called away by Gilbert and misses the truth once more. During the wedding feast, Oswin exposes Isabelle’s true nature. Alvin steps forward to protect Cecilia as her husband, and only then does Edmund learn that she is already married. Consumed by regret, Edmund apologizes and begs Cecilia for forgiveness. She rejects him with the words: “I loved you, but I should love myself more.” Isabelle is cast off by Edmund, and Oswin is taken away by the guards. Later, Alvin stages a proper proposal for Cecilia in a rose field, and she agrees to give him a chance. Two years later, a pregnant Cecilia strolls happily through the streets with Alvin. They pass Edmund without pause, each bound for a separate future.
