City United Women's Team The Rebuild

Synopsis

Megan, captain of the women’s football team “City United,” is told by owner Petersen that the team will be disbanded because it isn‘t profitable. The budget has been redirected to sign a male foreign player. In the locker room, no one leaves. Megan writes three words on the tactical board: “WE WON’T DISBAND.” They launch a crowdfunding campaign. Tom, a retired worker, mortgages his house and donates £20,000. Thousands of fans give what they can. At the naming-rights auction, Tom bids £500,000 and wins — the team is renamed “Fans United.” With no field, they train in a public park. With no coach, Megan coaches. With no medical staff, goalkeeper Emma learns first aid from a manual. Their first official match ends in a loss, then a draw, then a win. By season‘s end, they finish second and win promotion via playoffs. But the FA demands a professional stadium and youth academy within three months — otherwise, no promotion. The team launches another campaign, this time for signatures. 100,000 signatures are delivered to the FA. The FA grants an exception.
