Beatrice did not confront her immediately. Through the postal system, she identified the delivery address as the local lakeside rehabilitation center and, posing as a social worker, gathered information revealing that Margaret had been paralyzed since a car accident five years earlier, unable to hold a pen with either hand and thus incapable of writing letters. She subsequently traveled alone to Minneapolis to visit Margaret, confirming all her suspicions and learning that Robert was deeply insecure by nature, relying on others' affection to validate his own worth; they had dated during college, and after their breakup, when Margaret encountered difficulties, Robert never made a genuine effort to visit her. Upon returning to Chicago, Beatrice decided to conduct a covert investigation by using the postal system to mark old letters as "no such person" for virtual return.
